- Yonkers City Council is making a push to Governor Andrew Cuomo to bring downstate NY sports betting to its local casinos.
- The seven-member council voted unanimously, showing that Yonkers City truly wants sports betting.
- If approved, sports betting will come to the two Yonkers casinos, MGM Empire City and Resorts World.
YONKERS CITY, N.Y. - Sports betting in Yonkers City casinos may be incoming as the seven-member City Council unanimously voted for a resolution to bring sports betting.
The resolution is sponsored by Council Minority Leader Mike Breen and suggests sports betting could rake in upwards of $90 million in tax revenue. The only hurdle left is getting approval from New York Governor Andrew Cuomo who currently has his hands full dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic.
If approved, sports betting in Yonkers City would be a reality and the push would increase N.Y. status as a major locale for sports betting. These sportsbooks, however, would only be located in casinos and not online sports betting sites.
Sports Betting In Yonkers
New York sports bettors in Yonkers City may have some good news coming soon if the resolution is approved by Gov. Cuomo. The two major downstate casinos are eager to open up sportsbooks to residents and tourists alike.
Councilman Breen believes that the lack of sports betting in Yonkers City is driving potential revenue away to New Jersey, which is revenue that could be used for education and job growth.

“It’s driving over the bridge, millions of dollars,” said Breen. “That money could have been bet at the MGM casino with some money coming back to the city of Yonkers. It’s not a big thing that this can’t happen. It’s happening at other casinos upstate. We’re not asking for table games. We’re not asking for sports apps, the betting apps, where people can bet on their computers. We’re asking that people can come to the MGM Casino and place a bet on sports rather than driving over the bridge and spending that money in New Jersey.”
The MGM Empire City has recently closed temporarily as the coronavirus outbreak has stalled the nation. It is unclear when the casino will reopen or when Gov. Cuomo will have time to approve bringing sports betting to the city.
For now, sports bettors will have to be patient. However, it is quite likely that sports betting will be approved for Yonkers casinos, as the resolution describes it as a “natural extension of the existing legalized gambling.”
