  • Virginia and Virginia Tech are on different ends of the standings in the ACC.
  • Players on both sides will have to step up to finish strong.

BLACKSBURG, Va. — The Virginia Tech Hokies are set to play host to the reigning National Champions, Virginia Cavaliers. Virginia is looking to keep their March Madness hopes alive in what seems to be a trap game for them.

The Hokies, on the other hand, are trying to finish the season strong after having a disappointing 2019-20 campaign. They are looking to pull off the upset in this one and try to ruin whatever chances the Cavaliers have of making the tournament.

Betting Odds

The betting odds have been released on online sportsbooks for tonight’s matchup.

Considering that both teams are on separate ends of the ACC standings, the spread is close with a -2.5 spread in Virginia’s favor. UVA has a -150-money line odds while Virginia Tech has +130 odds to beat Virginia. The Over/Under for total points is 112.5.

It’s hard to see why the spread is close as Virginia Tech has been nothing but disappointing this season. The Over/Under, however, is interesting as both teams do know how to score the ball well.

In Virginia’s past eight games they have scored 55+ six times, while Virginia Tech has scored 55+ for 13 straight games. The Over bet should be taken with no hesitation.

Going Into Tonight

As previously mentioned, both UVA and Virginia are having let down seasons. Especially Virginia since they are the reigning national champions. Virginia Tech is currently 6-10 in ACC play, 15-12 on the year and sitting in 11th place in the conference.

Virginia, on the other hand, is 11-5 in ACC play, 19-7 on the season and fourth in the conference.

Both teams started off the season hot, Virginia Tech started 6-0 including a huge victory over the then third-ranked Michigan State. Since then they have been letting their fans down. Virginia started the season ranked in the top 25 at 11.

They made it all the way up to the fifth rank in the country before collapsing and falling out of the top 25 in week 11 and haven’t even sniffed the ranking since.

Virginia, however, with their 19-7 record is still fighting for an NCAA Tournament bid. A loss to the Hokies would be a huge blow to their chances of going to the big dance in March.

Player Watch

Tonight’s game has key players on both teams that need to do their parts if they want to come out victorious.

On the Hokies side, Landers Nolley II and Tyrece Radford need to keep scoring and rebounding as both of them have the ability to put up numbers in both categories. Wabissa Bede needs to continue his ability to pass the ball but others need to step up and find the open man if they are looking to pull off the upset.

For the Cavaliers, Mamadi Diakite needs to continue to lead this team, put the ball in the basket, and continue his athletic rebounding ability. Kihei Clark needs to score the ball and keep on finding the open man but like the Hokies, Clark is the only person with good passing vision.

On Defense, Braxton Key and Jay Huff both need to stay consistent in bringing down the defensive boards as well as rack up the blocks and steals as Huff averages 1.8 blocks and Key averages 1.3 steals.
