Sweet 16 Set: Top Seeds Hold, Few Cinderellas Remain

  • Duke (+220), Florida (+375), Auburn (+500), and Houston (+500) still sit atop the list of shortest odds to win the title, with each one seed advancing to the Sweet Sixteen
  • Only four of sixteen teams remaining are lower than a four seed (Ole Miss, Michigan, BYU, Arkansas)

NEWARK, N.J. – With the first weekend of March Madness in the books, the field has shrunk to sixteen teams looking for their shot to win a national championship.

  • Texas Tech: +2200
  • Maryland: +3000
  • Arizona: +3500
  • Kentucky: +5000

Lots of Chalk

The four one seeds remain intact and continue to have the shortest odds to win the title, followed by the three remaining two seeds in Alabama, Tennessee, and Michigan State.

Duke faces off against Arizona on Thursday night as 9.5-point favorites. They have been nothing short of the best team in the country thus far and would face the winner of Alabama and BYU in the next round, should they advance.

Florida had somewhat of a scare facing UConn in the round of 32, sneaking out with a two-point victory over the Huskies. The Gators will face Maryland, one of the most dangerous teams in the field coming off of a walk-off winner from freshman Derik Queen.

Auburn earned the top overall seed in the field and has failed to look as dominant as other top ranked teams, but still won their first two games by margins of 20 and 12. Michigan could pose a large problem for the Tigers, featuring two seven footers who could slow down their high powered offense.

Houston has not lost a game since December and beat a surging Gonzaga team in the round of 32 to advance into their matchup with Purdue. The Cougars should keep rolling into the Elite Eight, where they would have a date with either Tennessee or Kentucky.

March Madness sportsbooks online say Duke is the safe bet and so does the eye test. Cooper Flagg, Kon Knueppel, and Tyrese Proctor are playing their best basketball at the right time and look to deliver the Blue Devils their first national title since 2015.

Florida has looked every bit the part of a national championship contender, despite an eight seed in UConn giving them a run for their money. The defending national champions had the Gators on the ropes and they responded as well as you could hope for.

Duke and Florida have the shortest odds for a reason. Don’t hesitate to put your money on the Blue Devils or Gators.

Cinderella?

Only one double digit seeded team advanced to the Sweet Sixteen and that would be 10 seed Arkansas.

Ole Miss, Michigan, and BYU are the only other teams ranked lower than a four seed to make it this far and they each have longer odds than only Purdue and Arkansas.

Of these teams, Michigan has the best shot to make a real run at the title and cash in at online sportsbooks. They face Auburn on Friday, and if they win that game they would have a date with Michigan State or Ole Miss.

Michigan lost to Michigan State both times that the two played this season, each time by double digits. However, the Wolverines are currently on a five game win streak dating back to the Big Ten Conference Tournament, in which they beat Purdue, Maryland, and Wisconsin, three ranked opponents.

Finding a Cinderella is never going to be easy, but Michigan has the makings to fit the glass slipper.
