- The U.S. Women’s soccer team made history by scoring the most goals of any FIFA World Cup game for either gender.
- Thirteen goals were more than the total combined goals from the U.S. men’s team in their last four World Cups.
- Forward, Alex Morgan scored five goals in one game, tying the current record held by only two other players.
PARIS – The U.S. women’s soccer team set an unprecedented number of records during their first game of the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup. Their biggest accomplishment was the scoring of thirteen goals in one game, a record in the history of the World Cup. Another historical record maker came from having three separate players score at least two goals each in a single game.
“We wanted to make a statement,” said midfielder Julie Ertz, who started at center back in place of the injured Becky Sauerbrunn. “We wanted to kind of show all the tools we have.”
And a statement they made. Thailand, finally qualifying to be in the tournament was blindsided by the U.S. on the field.
"We've got two more games to play and we need to bounce back. They have their responsibilities and they know what they need to do,” said Coach Nuengruethai Sathongwien after the game to reporters. "My players were waiting for this moment and they were really disappointed."
What Does This Mean For Team USA?
The FIFA Women’s World Cup is comprised of eight different groups with four teams in each group. The first games are called the “Group Stage”. During this stage, teams are matched within their group, with the top two teams in each group advancing to the “Knockout Stage”.

Those that advance to the knockout stage do so by having the most wins but should there be a tie, the team that scored the most goals would be the one to advance. With thirteen goals under their belt in their first game alone, Team USA has solidified their spot in the knockout stage of the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
Following the knockout stage are the quarter-finals, then the semi-finals and then the finals. As with any sport, statistics become a factor when it comes to the leaderboard.
Due to the sheer amount of goals scored in their first game, it’s a safe bet that the U.S. will top the boards for the entire duration of the championship. If you are a bettor that is unfamiliar with soccer, goal lines are the equivalent to point spreads in football.
