Trends Support Taking Longshots When Betting On Belmont

BELMONT, N.Y. - Usually the final leg of the Triple Crown event, the Belmont Stakes is now the first event of the 2020 Triple Crown series.

Due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, not only have races been rescheduled but the Belmont will also run differently than normal.

The race will be shorter and the horses will only race 1-1/8 miles as opposed to the 1-1/2 miles that is known as “test of the champion."

The Belmont will be missing many top competitors in this version of the race.

Only two of the 18 horses who received points in the Road to the Kentucky Derby are likely to run in the race.

Missing these horses could change how well the oddsmakers predict the winner. However, when reviewing the numbers, it appears that online racing sites aren’t too keen on favoring the correct horse.

Tiz the Law is the outright favorite for this race with a -137 odds to win.

However, in the past, the Belmont has had many underdogs take the title.

Only two horses out of the last five years have won when they are the favorite going into the race. This trend continues downward, as three horses in the last ten years have proven the oddsmaker correct.

Last year, Sir Winston had three other horses with shorter odds and two horses with the same odds to win the Belmont before the race.

The Belmont’s results can always surprise horse bettors, which should give horse betting fans incentive to take the Belmont underdog.

The next Triple Crown event, the Kentucky Derby, is now scheduled for September 5 and the Preakness Stakes will be on October 3.
