LAS VEGAS – Serena Williams famously played in her last Grand Slam event at the 2022 US Open, but has left the door open to a potential return.

Speaking with Bradley Cooper, Serena revealed that “I feel like if I want to come back, I definitely can still come back.”

Williams, 40, lost her final professional match to Ajla Tomljanovic in the third round of the 2022 US Open.

Online sportsbooks are offering odds on a return, but that doesn’t seem to be in the cards.

The obvious impediment to her career at this point is that she wants to focus on raising her daughter, Alexis Olympia Ohanian Jr., whom she had with her husband, Alexis Ohanian.

In her retirement announcement, she noted that the couple could attempt to try for another child in the future.

“In the last year, Alexis and I have been trying to have another child, and we recently got some information from my doctor that put my mind at ease and made me feel that whenever we’re ready, we can add to our family,” Williams wrote.

“I definitely don’t want to be pregnant again as an athlete,” she continued. “I need to be two feet into tennis or two feet out.”

She also took the time to bemoan the situation she was in as a woman who wanted a family and as a competitor.

“It’s the hardest thing that I could ever imagine,” she wrote. “I hate it. I hate that I have to be at this crossroads.”

While it may seem unlikely that she returns, Jimmy Fallon asked her about returning in the context of Tom Brady’s return to football, and she did seem to entertain the idea.

“You know what? Tom Brady started an amazing trend,” Williams said. “That’s what I’m gonna say.”
