KANSAS CITY — The defending Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs owned the last pick in the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft. With that pick, the Chiefs added another weapon and champion to their roster in running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire who just won a national championship with the LSU Tigers before entering the draft.
In his last season playing for the LSU Tigers, Edwards-Helaire ran for 1,414 yards and 16 touchdowns while adding in 55 catches for 453 yards with one touchdown. With the pick, the Chiefs add an electric playmaker who is the perfect complement to the running backs Kansas City already has on their roster. A backfield combination of Edwards-Helaire, Darwin Thompson, & Damien Williams gives the Chiefs unprecedented depth at the position.
What Were The odds?
The selection of Edwards-Helaire also netted bettors a return at sportsbooks with NFL Draft odds as Kansas City had +145 odds to take an offensive player with their first pick in the draft.
Betting lines for the first running back to be drafted didn’t even have his name on the odds board. Instead, D’Andre Swift had the shortest odds at -215, then Jonathan Taylor followed at +285 to be the first RB off the board, and Edwards-Helaire as added into picking the ‘field’ at +600 odds.

The connection between Edwards-Helaire and Patrick Mahomes will be something to keep an eye out for as the LSU product could potentially be a darkhorse candidate to win the Rookie of the Year award.
At Bovada, Clyde Edwards-Helaire is listed at +700 odds to win this year’s Offensive Rookie of the Year award. In the Chiefs system, Edwards-Helaire will have the opportunity to come in and immediately be an impact player as his receiving ability out of the backfield will be one of his best attributes.
The Kansas City Chiefs' next selection in the draft will be in the second round with the 63rd pick. Rounds 2-3 of the NFL Draft will be tonight starting at 7 p.m. ET and will be broadcasted by ESPN & NFL Network.
