The Format

At TPC Louisiana this week, the pairings will be playing best ball formats for rounds 1 and 3, and alternating shot format for rounds 2 and 4.

For best-ball, both partners will hit every stroke on each hole, with the team using the best score on that hole between the two players as their official score.

For alternating shot, one player will tee off with the other player hitting the second shot. The player who hit the drive will then hit the third shot, and so on. The players alternate shots and alternate who will tee off on each hole.

It is a bit of a confusing format, but makes for one of the most unique viewing and competition formats on Tour.

Dangerous Duos

Looking at the list of competitor teams, there are some high-ranking players to be found at the top of the betting board.

Jon Rahm / Ryan Palmer +750

Jon Rahm is the first name on that list, ranking #3 in the OWGR. Rahm is partnered with Ryan Palmer, and is the defending champion of this event after winning in 2019.

Rahm ranks fourth among this field in strokes gained from ball striking over his last 12 rounds, while Palmer has notched three total top-five finishes at the Zurich in his career.

If this group drifts into a higher price around +1200, that could be a solid pick up for live bettors.

Xander Schauffele / Patrick Cantlay +800

Despite Xander Schauffele’s T-3rd finish at the 2021 Masters, this grouping hasn’t been getting much support pre-tournament.

Patrick Cantlay’s golf game is in shambles at the moment, as the current World #10 has missed three straight cuts for the first time in his career.

While these are two high-profile names, they are going into the fade department for this weekend’s tournament.

Collin Morikawa / Matthew Wolff +1600

Easily one of the most eye-catching pairings this weekend is that of PGA Champion Collin Morikawa and Matthew Wolff.

While Wolff and his hitched swing showed tremendous growth in 2020, he hasn’t yet looked the same since his right wrist injury at Torrey Pines.

Additionally, Morikawa currently ranks 57th in strokes gained through putting, but managed to pull out a T-7 finish last week at the RBC Heritage.

At +1600, this will be a wait-and-see approach for bettors looking to back these young guns.

Possible Longshot Pairings

Billy Horschel / Sam Burns +2200

Billy Horschel has enjoyed a decent 2021 through excelling in unique formats away from standard stroke play.

Horschel won the last match play event on Tour and should be able to counteract Sam Burns’ mistakes while emphasizing his strong suits.

At +2200, this is a good price for those looking to bet on golf.

Roberto Castro / Cameron Tringale +5000

Cameron Tringale is one of the hottest young golfers right now, earning seven top 25 finishes and three top ten in his last 15 tournaments.

Robert Castro is heating up as well, making two cuts in a row, and has history with Tringale in this event, where they finished fifth in 2019.

This pairing is easily worth their value, even for pre-tournament bettors.
