- The trade deadline came and went, leaving behind numerous swaps in the league including pitcher Mike Clevinger being shipping to the San Diego Padres.
- The Padres now hold the second shortest odds to win the National League at +500 behind the Los Angeles Dodgers at +165.
- Behind the Padres sit the Atlanta Braves (+700), Chicago Cubs (+800), and Cincinnati Reds (+2000).
SAN DIEGO – The 2020 MLB trade deadline has now passed, and with all the moves of the day there is one glaring notice that has been delivered across the entire National League.
The San Diego Padres are going for it.
Over the course of three days, the Padres dealt or acquired a total of 26 players across the entire landscape of Major League Baseball.
The moves were headlined by Monday’s blockbuster acquisition of former Cleveland Indians pitcher Mike Clevinger.
The Father Friars also added Greg Allen from the Indians to join Austin Nola, Austin Adams, Dan Altavilla, and Taylor Williams from the Seattle Mariners, Jason Castro from the Los Angeles Angels, Mitch Moreland from the Boston Red Sox, and Trevor Rosenthal from the Kansas City Royals.
That comes to a total shopping cart of four relief pitchers, two catchers, one outfielder, a first baseman, and a starting rotational pitcher for Padres general manager A.J. Preller.
Preller has clearly decided to go all-in on the current Padres roster to chase a championship in the near future or even this season.
By acquiring all these pieces, Preller has displayed his confidence in the current cornerstone of the aptly-named Slam Diego Padres, Fernando Tatis Jr.

Behind Tatis Jr., Jake Cronenworth, and Manny Machado, the Padres have ascended to second place in the NL West and first place in the NL Wildcard race.
Following the deadline acquisitions, the Padres betting odds have also soared. The online sportsbooks now have San Diego as the second shortest odds to win the entire National League.
Odds To Win The National League
- Los Angeles Dodgers +165
- San Diego Padres +500
- Atlanta Braves +700
- Chicago Cubs +800
- Cincinnati Reds +2000
- Philadelphia Phillies +2000
- St. Louis Cardinals +2000
- Milwaukee Brewers +2500
While the top spot is still rightfully held by the Dodgers, the Padres could be a worthwhile bet.
With only around 25 regular-season games remaining for most ballclubs, the Padres will have limited time to try to integrate their new members. The most important piece is undoubtedly Clevinger, who will use his career 3.20 ERA to provide some much-needed relief on a strained pitching rotation.
Many teams were in the running for Clevinger, including another team at the top of the NL betting odds, the Atlanta Braves.
Those looking to make some valuable baseball bets should closely monitor the Padres over the next few weeks, especially in their series against the Dodgers that begins September 14.
If the team continues to rake while improving on their pitching, it could be time to hammer down on Slam Diego.
