- American Helen Maroulis is back in Tokyo to defend her gold media in women’s freestyle wrestling.
- Maroulis nearly was forced to retire due to a concussion but now is back on the biggest stage to cement her status as a wrestling legend.
TOKYO - The Tokyo Olympics are well underway and American Helen Maroulis is back on the Olympic stage once again.
The winner of the gold medal at Rio 2016 is back at the age of 29 to prove to the world, and herself, that she is still one of the best female wrestlers in the world.
Maroulis competes in the women’s 55kg, 53kg, and 57kg categories and has championships dating back to the 2011 Pan American championships.
She became an American hero after her gold medal win in Rio, but prior to all the bright lights, she was just a girl from Rockville, Maryland. Maroulis racked up 99 victories in high school, including being dubbed the Most Outstanding Wrestler at Magruder High School by pinning the senior boy wrestler that held that title the previous year.
She advanced her career by moving on to Missouri Baptist University before eventually moving to Simon Fraser University in British Columbia, Canada.
Anyone looking to bet on Olympic wrestling can find Maroulis odds all over online sportsbooks.
Her wrestling journey culminated in Rio 2016, where she was nowhere near the favorites to win gold in her event. Maroulis went through a gauntlet of opponents that included multiple world champions to make the gold medal match against Japanese legend Saori Yoshida.
