Odds That Carson Wentz, Aaron Rodgers Are Traded Before Season

PHILADELPHIA — At the conclusion of the 2020 NFL draft there were two teams that already had their franchise quarterbacks and used valuable draft assets to select a prospect at the same position.

Those two teams whose draft choices raised eyebrows for those betting on the NFL are the Green Bay Packers and the Philadelphia Eagles.

The Green Bay Packers still have future Hall-of-Famer Aaron Rodgers under center after leading the team to the NFC Championship just this past season. The Philadelphia Eagles just signed former No. 2 overall pick Carson Wentz to a long-term extension although the quarterback has been injured often early in his career. But he’s shown he can lead a franchise to the playoffs.

With each team having long term quarterback solutions it raises the question of why these teams wouldn’t use this draft to get their franchise players more offensive weapons.

Thus, Bovada has listed odds for fans to bet on if Carson Wentz or Aaron Rodgers will be traded before the start of the 2020 regular season.

Carson Wentz And The Philadelphia Eagles

The Philadelphia Eagles used the 53rd pick in the second round to draft former Oklahoma Sooners quarterback Jalen Hurts. This move raised eyebrows across the NFL as it may have put Eagles starting quarterback Carson Wentz on the hot seat.

However, Eagles' head coach Doug Pederson has a different plan in mind on how he’ll use Hurts.

“Carson understands, and I wanted him to know, that he's our starter, he's the face of the Philadelphia Eagles, he's the franchise,” said Pederson. “He is the guy that's going to take us back, hopefully, one day, back to the Super Bowl, and get back to that championship level. So I wanted him to understand that first. But we also understand, and wanted him to understand, that we're going to continue to evaluate quarterbacks, and continue to draft quarterbacks every year. I've been a part of this as a player, in my days in Green Bay, and obviously as a coach, also.”

Winner: No (-1600). Carson Wentz is still the future for the Eagles and Jalen Hurts is not developed enough as a passer to be the starting quarterback for Philadelphia come Week 1. So, the best bet for this prop is to take the -1600 odds on the “No” option.

The Eagles drafting Hurts also gives them a dangerous dual-threat backup quarterback that can win the team games should Wentz go down with another injury. The +700 odds for Wentz to be traded are enticing but the risk outweighs the reward here and placing a bet on those underdog odds should be avoided.

Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers

The Green Bay Packers traded their No. 30 overall pick and a fourth-round pick with the Miami Dolphins in the first round of the draft to select Utah State Aggies quarterback Jordan Love with the 26th pick.

Love will get to learn behind Rodgers to start his career as it stands but the Packers are looking to the future as Rodgers heads into the twilight of his career.

“Obviously, Aaron Rodgers is the leader of this football team, and my expectation is that he will be for a long time," said LeFleur. "I sincerely love the guy, and I love working with him, and it's a hell of a lot of fun. I'm really excited about where we can take this, and that hasn't changed one bit.”

Winner: Yes (+500). While it is highly unlikely, Aaron Rodgers being traded isn’t out of the realm of possibilities especially if he requests a trade. The Packers haven’t done much to add more talent around Rodgers and the team still has a major hole at the wide receiver and tight end position coming out of the draft.

Placing a bet on +500 odds on USA online sportsbooks is a risk but if Rodgers is disgruntled enough with head coach Matt Lafleur and the Packers front office, they could ship him out while he still has some value around the league.

Drafting Jordan Love could be the writing on the wall for Rodgers just as it was for Brett Farve. As we get closer to the season, the chemistry between Rodgers, Love, and the Packers organization could start to reveal itself more.

The -900 odds are the safe bet as it seems the purpose of drafting Love now was to have him sit and learn from Rodgers before Rodgers ultimately retires in a few years. But, given the past history of Rogers's frustration with the organization a trade is very much on the table.
