- John John Florence is an American surfer competing at the upcoming Olympic Games.
- He has +550 odds to win the event, third-best on the board behind a pair of Brazilians.
TOKYO – Surfing is one of the events that will be taking place for the first time at the 2021 Olympics. Since it’s the first time and there are plenty of question marks surrounding the event, it may not be surprising to see a handful of competitors with relatively short odds.
John John Florence is one of them.
Who Is John John Florence?
John John Florence is a 28–year–old surfer from Honolulu, Hawaii who will be representing the United States in the upcoming Olympics. Florence became the youngest surfer to compete in the Vans Triple Crown of surfing when he was just 13-years-old.
He also won back-to-back World Surf League (WSL) championships in 2016 and 2017.
Listed with the third-shortest odds, online sportsbooks believe he could very well bring home the gold medal.

Since this is the first time we’ve seen this event in the Olympics, the WSL is the closest thing we have to seeing all of the top athletes compete against one another.
Florence has faired pretty well in the WSl, having won the title in 2016 and 2017 before suffering injuries in both of the 2018 and 2019 seasons. However, his success has been matched by Gabriel Medina, the betting favorite.
Men’s Surfing Betting Odds
- Gabriel Medina (BRA) +175
- Italo Ferreira (BRA) +325
- John John Florence (USA) +550
- Kanoa Igarashi (JPN) +700
- Jordy Smith (RSA) +1000
- Julian Wilson (AUS) +1200
- Kolohe Andino (USA) +1400
- Owen Wright (AUS) +2500
While Medina is well-deserving of being the betting favorite, there’s a fair case to be made that John John Florence should have shorter odds than what he does. With the gap between the two not too large, excellent value on the Olympic surfing odds is already being presented.
