NEW YORK – Sports betting never sleeps. While sports bettors, of course, need to go to bed the world keeps turning and the games keep being played all over the globe.
This Daily Sports Betting Preview visits London for the second leg of Manchester City and Manchester United’s Carabao Cup tie, and touches down in New York City as the New York Knicks play host to the surging Memphis Grizzlies.
The Snooker German Masters are also included for those looking for something different to bet on.
The Manchester Derby, Redux
After a dominating 3-1 victory in the first leg of the cup tie, Manchester City is poised to make it through on aggregate goals even with a close defeat today at the hands of local rivals Manchester United.
This is reflected in the odds – Manchester City is the -305 favorites to win the game today outright, but are at -10000 odds to move on given the goals they’ve already accrued in the first game of the two-game cup tie.
For Manchester United, this is a chance to knock at least one of their rivals off of their lofty perch. This season has been a rough one for the once-great Manchester squad, as arch-rivals Liverpool have dominated the league, and Manchester City has spent the last 5 years as the better team in their own town.
United fans would dearly love a chance to upset their local rivals, and surely need it after the way the last few years have gone. Manchester United have not been a bad team, they’ve just not been a top tier one either, and for a club with the history and prestige of United, that has been a tough pill to swallow.
On the spread, United are +1.5 goal underdogs, whereas on the money line they are +750, while a draw is +475. In order to advance, they’ll need to win by enough to overcome Manchester City’s 3-1 lead in the cup tie, which is a tall order in a game they aren’t favored to win outright. This gives them +2500 odds to advance to the next round of the Carabao Cup.
Surging Grizzlies Only Mildly Favored Against Knicks
The Memphis Grizzlies have been on an absolute tear recently, with a 10-2 record in their last 12 games, and have almost swung themselves back above .500 with this run, as their record now sits at 23-24, good for eighth in the Western Conference.
This run has mostly been against bad teams such as the Phoenix Suns and the Minnesota Timberwolves, but there are some good wins in there – the Grizzlies are fresh off a victory over the Denver Nuggets, and have also defeated the Los Angeles Clippers and the Houston Rockets in this span of time.
During this run, the Grizzlies have led the league in assists per game, with 29.7. In addition, they have logged the second-most wins in the league during this time frame, behind only the decidedly elite Milwaukee Bucks.

The @memgrizz improved to 10-3 in the month of January.
This is the first time the Grizzlies have won double-digit games in a single calendar month since going 11-6 in December 2016.

Examining the New York Knicks over the same arbitrary time span is a slightly more depressing prospect. The Knicks are 3-9 in their last 12 games, the sixth-worst record over that span. They’re averaging 102.1 points per game, second-worst in the league, compared to Memphis’ 118.6.
The Knicks are a mess, to be completely frank. The roster does not make a lot of sense in the age of three-point shooting and spacing, with an overabundance of power forwards like Marcus Morris and Julius Randle who are good players, but not the guys that can lead a team in scoring.
The Knicks stats over their last 12 games are rough, but they’re more or less representative of the team over the course of the season. For the whole season, the Knicks are 28th in offensive rating, 28th in points per game, 24th in defensive rating, and have a record of 13-35.
Per BetOnline, however, this game could be close. The Grizzlies are 2.5 point road favorites on the spread, and -135 on the money line, which is a shockingly close matchup for two teams that have so differentiated themselves from each other, while appearing to be on similar paths early in the season.
Sports bettors should keep an eye on this head-scratcher of a line.
Bonus Bet Highlight: Snooker German Masters
Just in case the above two games didn’t scratch the sports betting itch properly, the German Masters, a professional Snooker tournament, starts today and runs through February 2nd. The defending champion Kyren Wilson has been eliminated in the qualifiers by up-and-coming prodigy Zhao Xintong, and this has guaranteed a new champion this year.
Xintong, however, is only a -140 favorite in his game against Anthony McGill. The largest favorite on the board during the first round of the tournament is Neil Robertson, at -1200, who is taking on Ian Burns. Robertson is one of the best players in the world and is a former World Champion.
Speaking of the best players in the world, Judd Trump is also heavily favored, -850 against Noppon Saengkham, in a match that takes place at 2 p.m. Eastern Standard Time on January 29, 2020. If one is looking for constant snooker action, look no further than the German Masters.
