CFP Odds Signal Three Locks, Two Teams Compete For Final Spot

MIAMI — As the 2020 college football remains on schedule, sportsbooks have released odds on who will make the College Football Playoffs this year. The Clemson Tigers, Ohio State Buckeyes, and Alabama Crimson Tide have the shortest odds to reach the playoffs.

The Oklahoma Sooners and Georgia Bulldogs could come down to the conference championships to decide if they will make it or not. The LSU Tigers are considered an underdog to make the playoffs without Joe Burrow, despite coming off a national title win.

High Favorites

According to several online sportsbooks, Clemson, Ohio State, and Alabama should be considered locks to make the college football playoffs.

Of the three, Clemson leads the odds at -200. It is safe to say that as long as Trevor Lawrence is listed as the starting quarterback, those odds are not going to change.

As far as Ohio State, they are in a similar situation. With Justin Fields starting under center, their -150 odds at making the playoffs look to remain stable. Both of those quarterbacks also lead the odds board for 2020 Heisman Trophy winners.

For Alabama, it’s a different story. Though they did not make the playoffs last year with the injury of Tua Tagovailoa and slight collapse towards the end of the season, bettors would have to be crazy to think that Nick Saban would allow that to happen again.

He is arguably one of the greatest college football coaches of all time and as long as he is on the sidelines, they should always be considered a threat to make the postseason.

The Crimson Tides’ odds to make the CFP are at -125, and deservingly so. The team has only missed the playoffs once since it’s inception in 2014.

Down To The Wire

With three teams considered heavy favorites to make the playoffs, that leaves only one more team to be able to make it. College football odds have Oklahoma and Georgia fighting for the final playoff spot.

Oklahoma has made the college football playoffs for the past three years and are looking to make it one more.

They’ll be heavily tested this year with first-year starter Tanner Mordecai under center as Jalen Hurts will be moving on to the NFL.

On a lighter note, the Sooners have Kennedy Brooks returning, who rushed for over 100 yards four times last year and is looking to take over the offense. Oklahoma’s odds at making the playoffs are at +125.

The last time that Georgia made the playoffs was in 2018. They have been consistently good over the past few years and are looking to stay that way this year. They’ll be tested under center as well with Stetson Bennett taking over as the starter with Jake Fromm going pro.

One thing that is keeping them in the playoff hunt is that they have kept a lot of their receiving core from last year with George Pickens and Demetris Robertson. Their odds to make the playoffs this year are at +150.

Underdogs

LSU is considered an underdog team to make the playoffs this year with +200 odds. There is no doubt that losing Joe Burrow and Justin Jefferson is a huge blow for them, but they still have what is looking to be an elite group of receivers led by Ja’Marr Chase and Terrace Marshall.

Starting at quarterback, they have Myles Brennan, who most people don’t really know what to expect from him. With such an elite group of receivers though, Brennan could be set up for greatness.
