LAS VEGAS - Marshall and Buffalo are set to face off in a clash of top-level G5 teams today.
This matchup brings the 7-2 Marshall Thundering Herd face to face with the 5-1 Buffalo Bulls. Both teams won their division, and lost in their respective league title games, with Marshall falling to UAB and Buffalo falling to Ball State.
This matchup should be a great one, both in terms of the quality of football played and the parity between the two teams.
Marshall vs. Buffalo - Camellia Bowl
- Marshall +140
- Buffalo -160
Marshall, interestingly, enters this game as underdogs despite being one of the most exciting G5 teams in the nation.
Perhaps it’s not entirely surprising, given that they’ve lost their last two games in a row, but they still have some talent on the team. Quarterback Grant Wells currently leads the C-USA in passing yards, although that number is relatively low at 219.0 YPG.
He also leads the conference in touchdown passes with 18 - Marshall has a legitimate offense, there’s no doubt about that.
Buffalo, on the other hand, played notably fewer games than Marshall, but in doing so, lost fewer games as well. The only loss on the Bulls’ schedule came in the MAC Championship Game at the hands of Ball State.
Jaret Patterson has been putting up some absurd numbers at running back for the Bulls, with 19 touchdowns through only six games. Granted, eight of those touchdowns came in one game against Kent State, but even not counting that game, 11 touchdowns in five games is still a ridiculous pace.
Patterson also has over 1000 yards on the season - again, in only six games!
The spread for this matchup is pretty close, given the teams’ similar resumes and quality of opponents.

Marshall vs. Buffalo - Camellia Bowl
- Marshall +3.0 (-110)
- Buffalo -3.0 (-110)
Buffalo, as the favorite on the moneyline, is also favored on the spread, but the spread is firmly in the Vegas zone.
A three point spread at online sportsbooks is tough to evaluate - it tells bettors that Buffalo is favored, but that’s about all it says.
The Head To Head Matchup
Buffalo enters this game having never beaten Marshall - ever. The two teams have played eight times, and Marshall has won each time.
The good news for Buffalo is that the last time these two teams played was in 2004 - long enough ago to make that trend irrelevant to the actual game being played.
Marshall is riding high in terms of winning bowl games, however, with a 12-3 record in bowl games. Given that they are underdogs, a win would mean they would cover the spread in this matchup. In addition, Marshall is adept at covering the spread in those bowl games. In their last eight bowl games, they have covered the spread seven times.
Overall, Marshall is looking like a pretty frisky underdog in this matchup - exactly where they want to be.
The Thundering Herd is 11-4 against the spread in the last 15 games they have entered as an underdog.
Those betting on the Camellia Bowl should take note of all these trends indicating that Marshall has a solid shot in this matchup.
This bowl game kicks off at 2:30 p.m. EST.
