California Sports Betting Bill Pulled, No Betting Until 2023

  • Tribal opposition has led to the potential sports betting bill in California being pulled.
  • The discourse came from the Native Tribes being opposed to online sports betting and a clause that would further legitimize card rooms.
  • The deal being pushed back forces it to miss the deadline, which means they cannot implement sports betting until the next voting term.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Sports betting in the Golden State has taken a major setback as the proposed sports betting bill has been pulled.

This event forces the bill to miss the Thursday deadline that would have seen the bill voted on in November. Now the earliest California can vote on sports betting is in November of 2022, making 2023 the earliest possible date for regulated sports betting.

The bill was pulled by California State Senator Bill Dodd, sponsor of the bill, due to the opposition of Native Tribes.

California Sports Betting On Hold

California sports bettors will have to wait a bit longer for regulated sports betting to come to their local casinos.

Local Native Tribes opposed the bill due to the inclusion of online sports betting, which the tribes are against, and a clause that would allow card rooms to legally offer blackjack.

The proposed bill SCA 6 would have given more legal backing to the Native Tribes biggest gaming rivals, the card rooms, whom the tribes to not deem as lawful.

Due to this, bill sponsor Senator Bill Dodd has decided to pull the proposed bill, missing the deadline but hoping to come to some agreement by all parties by the next deadline in 2022.

“Given the deadlines for getting a measure on the November ballot and the impact of COVID-19 on the public’s ability to weigh in, we were not able to get the bill across the finish line this year,” said Dodd. “It remains important that we lift this widespread practice out of the shadows to make it safer and to generate money for the people of California. I will continue to be engaged in the issue as we work toward 2022.”

California has managed to gain support from the NFL, MLB, and the NBA for the proposed sports betting bill.

This set back now forces local sports bettors to continue to wait for in-state regulated sports betting.
