LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the real Kentucky Derby will not be held on the first Saturday of May and will be held on September 5, 2020, instead. However, on the first Saturday of May, there will be a virtual Kentucky Derby featuring all of the greatest horses to ever race in the event.
Virtual Kentucky Derby
The Virtual Kentucky Derby will be the first of its kind due to the unfortunate circumstances. The way that the race is going to be set up is the past thirteen Triple Crown winners will face off in virtual format in what will be called “The Kentucky Derby: Triple Crown Showdown.”
“For many fans around the country, the first Saturday in May has become a part of their family’s yearly traditions — While we eagerly look forward to the 146th Kentucky Derby this year on the first Saturday in September, we will celebrate the annual excitement of our traditional date with our fans and community by offering ways for us to join together for a great cause. Our fans will be captivated by the realistic view of the virtual race and we can debate, as we do each year, our favorite to win,” said Kevin Flanery, the president of the Churchill Downs Racetrack.
During the race, fans will be able to pick their favorite horse to win the race and while doing so, make a donation to the COVID-19 relief efforts. Whoever picks the winning horse will have a chance to win a VIP Experience to the Kentucky Derby in September.
“The anticipation of which Triple Crown winner will emerge as the ultimate champion is thrilling—but most importantly, we are proud to use this platform as a force for good by raising money for these worthy COVID-19 emergency initiatives. We urge fans to join us by donating and celebrating with us from home,” said Bill Carstanjen, CEO of the Churchill Downs Incorporated.
