PRINCETON, N.J. – The coronavirus has claimed yet another sporting event as the Men’s and Women’s Ivy League Conference basketball tournament was canceled due to health concerns from the widespread illness.
The tournament was scheduled to begin March 13-15 and since no games will be played the Ivy League decided to give the automatic NCAA tournament bids to the regular-season conference champions.
The Yale University Bulldogs (23-7, 11-3 in conference) will be representing the Ivy League in the NCAA tournament for the second straight year. On the women’s side, the Princeton Tigers (26-1, 14-0 in conference) will receive the automatic bid to play in the Women’s NCAA tournament.
“We understand and share the disappointment with student-athletes, coaches and fans who will not be able to participate in these tournaments,” said Robin Harris, Ivy League Executive Director. “Regrettably, the information and recommendations presented to us from public health authorities and medical professionals have convinced us that this is the most prudent decision.”
The state of Massachusetts which was hosting the Ivy League Tournament has recently seen a spike in its positive cases of coronavirus.

Over 1.5 (+235) Under 1.5 (-330)
Winner: Over 1.5 (+235). With the coronavirus spreading throughout the world the Ivy League tournament likely won’t be the last Conference tournament to be canceled before March Madness officially begins. Take the +235 odds on the Over for this prop because that is where the profit lies and all it will take is one more conference to cancel their tournament.
If more Conference tournaments are canceled it isn’t because the NCAA is preventing the Conference administrators from doing so.
“NCAA member schools and conferences make their own decisions regarding the regular season and conference tournament play. As we have stated, we will make decisions on our events based on the best, most current public health guidance available. Neither the NCAA COVID-19 advisory panel, made up of leading public health and infectious disease experts in America nor the CDC or local health officials have advised against holding sporting events. In the event circumstances change, we will make decisions accordingly,” The NCAA wrote in a statement.
While the Ivy League tournament was cancelled there are still plenty of Conference tournaments still scheduled to happen this weekend. Those tournaments will still give bettors the opportunity to bet on college basketball at online sportsbooks.
