NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Derrick Morgan, starting linebacker for the Tennessee Titans, announced his retirement via an Instagram post after nine seasons with the team. Morgan finished out his four-year contract worth $27 million last season. Once his contract was up, Morgan realized that the NFL chapter of his life was coming to a close. Rather than become a free agent, he has decided to move on from the game that’s given him so much.
"My purpose in life is bigger than the game," Morgan said to Turron Davenport of ESPN. "What football taught me was the power of influence. My goal is to create better and more meaningful opportunities for marginalized communities to break the cycles of generational poverty and build greater wealth and economic mobility. I feel a deep responsibility to leverage my platform for this."
During his career with the Titans, Morgan was able to build his NFL stats to 44.5 sacks and 305 tackles in the nine seasons he played. His sacks became a record of the sixth most of all time in the shared history of the Titans and the Houston Oilers. He played in a total of 118 games for the Titans. Morgan has many business ventures that he will be pursuing now that he is retired. Real estate is at the forefront, where he’d like to give back to his hometown of Coatesville, Pennsylvania in a big way with some sort of real estate centered endeavor.
Morgan’s Retirement Statement
While Morgan made an announcement of his retirement via twitter and then spoke with ESPN about his posts, his Instagram statement was the first to hit the public.
“I had a strong inclination going into this year that this would be my last. I’ve always said 2 things about my career. 1. I would play as long as it made sense. And 2. I wanted to leave the game on my OWN terms. And over 9y ears, 5 head coaches, 9 surgeries, and seeing a locker room turn over multiple times I am thankful to say that I accomplished both of these goals. It’s been a pure blessing to live out a childhood dream and I’m THANKFUL to the @titansorganization for giving me my shot, my fans, friends, and family over the years who’ve been a huge support and most importantly God for bringing me this far.”

The Titans are sad to see Morgan go; however, they knew this day was coming. They’ve gained a handful of linebackers to their roster over the past few seasons, anticipating Morgan’s departure after his four-year contract was up.
