Defending champion Ashleigh Barty was forced to retire in her match Thursday morning against Magda Linette when a hip injury proved too much for the Australian to continue.
Barty trailed Linette 1-6 2-2 in the second set when she decided the injury was too much for her to continue, and signaled that she would withdraw from the competition.
As one of the pre-tournament favorites, her departure from the field has caused a major shift in betting odds for the French Open.

Barty’s injury adds her to a list of top women now out of the French Open field joining Naomi Osaka and Simona Halep.
The hip injury apparently reappeared in pre-tournament training and became too much to handle during the match Thursday.
"It's heartbreaking," said Barty following the match. "We have had such a brilliant clay-court season, and to kind of get a little bit unlucky with timing, more than anything, to have something kind of acute happen over the weekend and just kind of run out of time against the clock is disappointing."
