NEW YORK - The NHL/NHLPA met on Wednesday for a Return to Play Committee meeting where they did not yet decide on a date for hockey to resume.
Avid NHL bettors will have to continue to rely on future hockey bets listed on various sportsbooks until athletes are allowed to return to the rink.
The committee meeting resulted in a joint statement that was released, summarizing the overall discussions that took place.
The Statement Released By The NHL/NHLPA
The NHL 2019-2020 season was halted on March 12 in response to the COVID-19 outbreak. Almost two months later and the league has remained inactive.
After weighing information that was received by numerous medical experts on the Coronavirus pandemic as well as both national and local authorities on the issue, the Return to Play Committee met Wednesday for their weekly meeting and released the following statement in regards to when the hockey season could start up again.
“Despite numerous reports and speculation over the last several days, the NHL and the NHLPA have not made any decisions or set a timeline for possible return to play scenarios.
Given recent developments in some NHL Clubs' local communities, we are now looking ahead to a Phase 2 of the transition period that would follow the currently recommended Phase 1 period of ‘self-quarantine’ by Players and Hockey Staff.
The precise date of transition to Phase 2, during which Players might return to small group activities in NHL Club training facilities, remains undetermined. However, provided that conditions continue to trend favorably - and, subject to potential competitive concerns as between disparately situated markets - we believe we may be able to move to Phase 2 at some point in the mid-to-later portion of May. Specific guidelines governing Player and Hockey Staff activity would be provided at that time. In the meantime, we expect Players and Hockey Staff to continue to adhere to the recommended guidelines put in place when the season was paused on March 12.”

What People In The NHL Are Saying
Commissioner Gary Bettman has said that the final decision to begin playing hockey again will be up to health officials. Once the NHL has been given the green light from these individuals, they plan to resume the season. There has been talk of closed arena games in a handful of cities that could take place beginning in July, however that is just one of the multiple scenarios being thrown around.
“Among the scenarios we’re looking at is potentially as many as four (cities) because we need a lot of ice,” said Bettman on Sportsnet last week.
Players want to get back on the ice as soon as possible. There were 189 total games left to play among the 31 teams when the season was stopped. Being able to play a full season may not be in the cards this year but athletes have been told they would most likely have to play during the summer months.
“We would obviously expect the league to prepare a very detailed plan to mitigate risk,” said Alberta Premier Jason Kenney. “I gather the NHL is looking at finishing the season in arenas for television purposes without large crowds. Whether or not we could accommodate that, we do not yet know.”
The Stanley Cup could very well be scheduled for a Fall 2020 date at this point. The NHL/NHLPA Return to Play Committee will continue to meet weekly to resolve the problem. The league could lose an estimated $1 billion if they do not finish out the season.
Until a date has been approved to begin playing again, fans will need to continue to wager on futures bets for the NHL to scratch that hockey betting itch.
